Roadworks at Holloway Circus in Birmingham City Centre are causing significant delays to services 80, 80A, 98 and X64.

We're really sorry for the disruption that these works are causing to our customers on these routes and have liaised with Birmingham City Council and Transport for West Midlands at length to try to reduce their impact.

The roadworks are due to continue until February 2018 and delays are expected to get worse. We therefore need to make a temporary change to the route of the 80, 80A, 98 and X64 between Five Ways and Birmingham City Centre to divert buses away from the majority of the congestion.

We'd like your views on the options for diverting buses towards Birmingham please.

Option 1

From Five Ways, buses on the 80, 80A, 98 and X64 could operate along Broad Street, Great Charles Street Queensway, Snow Hill Queensway, Priory Queensway, Moor Street Queensway, through the Bull Ring tunnel and then continue as now along Holloway Head out of City.

We would not be able to serve Upper Dean Street for the Markets on the 80 & 80A, although new parts of Birmingham City Centre would be served. The Markets would be accessible via the spiral staircase leading from Smallbrook Queensway down to Dudley Street (opposite New Street Station).

Option 2

From Five Ways, buses on the 80, 80A, 98 and X64 could operate along Islington Row Middleway to Bristol Street (Bristol Road) and then run along Bristol Street to Holloway Head. Buses would then turn right there and continue along their current routes to their existing termini.

In option 2, buses would still need to travel across the Holloway Circus island where lane closures may cause delays to traffic travelling from Bristol Street. Delays may therefore be more variable in option 2 than in option 1, although the Markets would continue to be served.

In both options, Holloway Head and Bath Row would no longer be served on journeys towards Birmingham whilst the diversion is in place. Buses would still serve these roads on journeys from Birmingham as the delays are caused towards Birmingham only.
